Interesting lunch options are a bit thin in Victoria. God knows why. Lots of people work in the area and they would surely welcome exciting alternatives to the big chains that own Victoria Street and the older side streets caffs. For example, there should be more places like Picante who are tucked away on their own in a quiet corner but have a big following for their Mexican food.A spooky chalk drawing of their mustachioed skull logo guards the entrance to a simple cafe interior with a packed counter at the back and a queue running along the side to the pavement.

All the usual Mexican favourites are available, although a sign on the wall says the more time consuming quesadillas are not served in peak hours on Thursday and Fridays in order to help keep the queue down.
Thankfully the fajita burrito sits second in the menu and so there is no time wasted explaining the fajita concept to a server as still happens in one or two chains who don't bother to list them. A short fat chicken version with a pleasingly smooth flavoured chipotle and lime (like the lime) marinated chicken, medium sauce and no cream couldn't be faulted and these days is almost a bargain for £5.25.
