Church food
The Church of St Mary Aldermary on Watling Street in Bow has kindly allowed a little street food community to build up on the land surrounding the church building.

Space is limited and Burrito Joe has the best spot by the main entrance on Bow Lane where they've built up a loyal following for their very good value £5 chicken burritos, which include lots of meat fresh off the hot plate, free guac and there's some handy seating on the churchyard benches. The pulled pork version is £5.50 and they have plans to open a gourmet steak sandwich stall next door in a week or so.

Bangkok Kitchen and the Burger Barn are located on the Mansion House side and Burger Barn offer cheap burgers made with meat from Smithfield Market. The 4oz burger comes with generous toppings and friendly service for just £4 but some slightly more expensive gourmet options might be more crowd pleasing.

The church itself also serves tea, coffee, biscuits, provides free wifi and in theory you can take your lunch inside but that feels like a disrespectful thing to do in another one of those breathtaking halls which are hidden within the anonymous grey exteriors of many City churches. The current building dates from 1682 and there has been a church on the site for over 900 years. Think about that while waiting for a burrito.
