Savannah Jerk (below) recently closed after many years on Wardour Street and have left Jerk City to their own in what used to the Caribbean corner of Soho. The now common story of rising Soho rents forcing independents out is probably to blame, plus the entrance was a little dated in comparison to the newer neighbours and there isn't much buzz around Caribbean cuisine but over in Spitalfields the Cafe Caribbean stall usually has the longest lunchtime queue in the area.

The menu of stewed, curried and jerk meats from the hot buffet has barely changed since it opened a few years ago and chef/boss Warren Richards is still manning the kitchen and counter.

Meals are £5 to £6 and come with a rice & peas base but for a change you can try a stewed chicken with a cabbage base. The chicken is very well cooked, but just a couple of pieces. A KFC style choice of extra meat portions would be handy and take lots of napkins to clean your fingers afterwards.

Cafe Caribbean and Warren were featured in a BBC feature in January on mutton and how the "city boys are lapping it up".
