Sausage & Mash have closed their restaurant in Leadenhall Market and sadly taken their big Carry On pictures with them. With Mother Mash serving much the same food just a short distance away, there probably wasn't a need for both and so Tortilla will be replacing sausages with burritos in what will be their fifth outlet. Once the extensive refurbishment is completed, there will be seating for 110 diners and more space outside on the pavement.Tortilla, 28 Leadenhall Market, EC3
Dark clouds have once again gathered over Fuzzy's Grub and forced the closure of the iconic Cornhill shop. The City take-away carvery chain first got into trouble at the start of the crunch when there were a number of closures and the rest sold off. The Cornhill branch had appeared to be doing quite well again but the now familiar sign on the door says the premises were repossessed by the landlord who wanted some rent paying. The Basinghall Street shop was still busy yesterday and hopefully all the others are, but the prime rent of the Cornhill shop may be too high for this one to open again.
Il Locale originally opened off Fenchurch Street a year ago as the first London outpost of the Turkish restaurant/bar chain Tike and later became the most reflective restaurant in London when mirrored panels were fitted to the windows presumably to stop people being spotted slacking inside. The spring brought a sudden rebranding into the Italian restaurant Il Locale but not long after the site was put up for sale and now seems to have closed for good.
Lahori Masala has also closed after miraculously surviving 6 months next to Hawksmoor on Commercial Street in Shoreditch. Sadly everything about it was a car crash. The wrong concept in the wrong location with a huge interior that had zero style and it only made sense during the introductory 50% discount.
Percento on Ludgate Hill was one of Etrusca's more modern Italian restaurants and had quite a discreet entrance that could be mistaken for an office reception if you didn't look closely. This could be part of the reason why it's now had to close down and will soon be replaced by the more recognisable French brasserie chain Côte. Unlike much of the City, Ludgate Hill has been something of a graveyard for the smaller operators recently with three neighbouring spots in a row standing empty and more spaces opposite and in the side streets.
